Jerry Dickinson responds to Justice Alito’s draft opinion

Back to News

This evening, Jerry Dickinson, a constitutional law professor at the University of Pittsburgh and candidate for Congress in Pennsylvania’s 12th district, released the following statement:

“Justice Alito’s draft reasoning to overturn Roe v. Wade is an extraordinary assault on the Supreme Court’s constitutional tradition of respecting established precedent. The Court has never overturned and reversed a longstanding fundamental right, such as the right to abortion. If Roe is overturned, it will leave an indelible mark on the legitimacy of the Court as an American institution.

“This is the culmination of a decades-long, coordinated effort by the far-right to undermine the constitutional right to abortion. But as of right now, abortion is still legal. We need to fight to keep it that way.

“Congress must act swiftly to pass legislation that will protect the right to abortion. The Senate must abolish the filibuster immediately and pass the Women’s Health Protection Act to codify a federal right to abortion, and we must repeal the Hyde Amendment immediately to make abortion accessible under Medicaid.”

Jerry Dickinson is a candidate for Congress in Pennsylvania’s 12th district and a constitutional law professor at the University of Pittsburgh, specializing in issues related to Congress, executive powers, and the separation of powers. He previously served as a law clerk for the Honorable Theodore A. McKee, former Chief Judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit in Philadelphia.
